They had a question pertaining to air / fuel. Specifically, a customer had asked them for an air fuel readout, which they do not have the equipment for, and he wanted to know if he could add it to his existing set up and "what it is and what will it do for me?"

WHAT!

Okay, let me step back a second. This question is acceptable from my mother, not a "tuner" who claims to build race motorcycles.

I had no words. literally so flabbergasted by this question that I could not find words to explain to this person what air fuel ratios were and why they mattered.

Have this Amazon playing in the snow:

This guy is a tuner and couldn't say why having that information could be good? Oh dear.

Plus more data is always useful to have. God only knows how lean or rich the stuff he's done is. How long has he been in business?

My god. If I had a "tuner" tell me they didn't understand why I wanted the AFR readings I would slap them in the face and take my bike as far away as possible. At a minimum they should understand the concept even if they don't feel they need to test every minor fuel map change.

Knowing/not knowing what the equipment is and how it functions is one thing. Not knowing why you'd want to know whether an engine is running lean or rich...

Let's just say motorcycle tuner boy has a lump of oatmeal working overtime pretending to be his brain.

Seriously, how does one get to be a "Tuner" without knowing what an A/F ratio is, or how it is useful?

Kinja'd!!!

So a few years back I was working at a performance shop and one fine day we had a guy call in who had bought a handheld tuner from us for his Challenger. It was included with a cold-air kit as a simple install/download tune file.

In this call he said that he had changed the rear-end ratio (final drive) in the tuner a few times and each time he did he stated that the speedometer needle was climbing like crazy but the car didn't feel any faster. He didn't understand why it didn't feel faster... He really thought he had been changing the rear-end ratio by the hand-held.

I was seriously kidding I know what the Air/Fuel Gauge does and why its important especially for tuning purposes ..

The fact someone has a costumer coming into the store and paying for this type of service is very very scary.. I'll be sure to ask my next motorcycle tuner what a air fuel gauge does.

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > DatASSun

Kinja'd!!!0

I figured you were kidding, but I thought I'd remark - if a tuner were not smart enough to know that the gauge existed and how it worked, that'd be one thing. A very sad thing, but not completely a disaster.

Not knowing what A/F mix is... a completely different level of fail.

trust me the old school guys that know how to read plugs, know what a/f ratio is and why its important. The color tells you if its rich or lean, adjust the carbs accordingly.

Why the bullocks would I trust you? You dont even seem to understand that I would understand the very thing you are trying to explain to me when I introduced the idea in the first place.

Kinja'd!!! Kenneth Lee > Frank Grimes

Kinja'd!!!0

Right, whatever, but your post seemed to indicate, at least the way i read it, that some old school guy who reads spark plugs wouldn't know what an air fuel ratio is and perhaps that's the reason he asked about it. And I shall restate anyone that tunes by spark plug color knows exactly what an air fuel ratio is and why its important. Therefore your argument is invalid, thanks for playing.

Kinja'd!!! Frank Grimes > Kenneth Lee
02/16/2014 at 19:32

Kinja'd!!!0

Undesrtanding the cause and the effect of a/f on a spark plug os not the same as knowing specifics that a gauge or measuring device might give.

Whats with dorks like you thinking they know everything then submit a weak argument and then end witb some annoying wannabe definitive statement like there is no further to be said.

Kinja'd!!! Kenneth Lee > Frank Grimes
02/16/2014 at 20:06

Kinja'd!!!0

How many engines have you rebuilt? carburetors have you set up? I've done plenty of both. Its very adult of you to resort to name calling way to go. You obviously dont understand the hilarity of saying what you just said. Spark plug color absolutely wont be as accurate as a gauge you are correct in that i'll give you that. But I stand by my statement if you know enough to tune your engine by plug color you know what an air fuel ratio is. This dork has built and tuned everything from single cylinder 2 stroke atv's to 4 cylinder sportbikes to big block v-8's. But since you just want to resort to name calling I'm out.

Kinja'd!!! Frank Grimes > Kenneth Lee
02/16/2014 at 20:20

Kinja'd!!!0

Rebuilding an engine and tuning it are not the same. Just because someone knows a cylinder is running lean or rich by looking at a spark plug does not mean they know the specific a/f. Just because a guy who can tune with cause and e ffect of a/f on a sparks plug doesnt mean he knows the maths or how to use a a/f gauge or sensor.

Do you have no reading comprehension skills? set up carburetor = tune engine, because a properly set up carburetor delivers the correct air to fuel ratio, since that's its entire purpose! But seriously i'm done with this post, if you reply i'm not bothering even reading it.
